Testing Options
Self-Serve, Asymptomatic Testing
U of U faculty, staff, and currently enrolled students (not household members) who are asymptomatic may go to our SELF-SERVE SITES.
U of U faculty, staff, currently enrolled students and household members who are asymptomatic may follow the ASYMPTOMATIC instructions below for a test at our staffed collection site.
Asymptomatic vs Symptomatic Testing
What is the difference between asymptomatic and symptomatic testing?
Asymptomatic testing is conducted weekly throughout the semester as a way to identify COVID-19 in people who are not showing any symptoms of the disease. Because you might contract the virus and transmit it to others before you ever experience symptoms, weekly asymptomatic testing may identify that you are positive and need to isolate, thus helping prevent the spread of the virus. Follow the instructions below for asymptomatic testing.
Symptomatic testing is conducted when a campus community member has any symptoms, even mild ones, of COVID-19.
Staff-Assisted PCR Testing
Asymptomatic testing is free for students, faculty and staff and immediate household members of students, faculty and staff.
Hours of operation
REGULAR ASYMPTOMATIC TESTING
Regular asymptomatic testing – whether the individual is vaccinated or not - is an important part of slowing the spread of COVID-19. New scheduling surveys will be released by Thursday each week for the following week’s testing dates.
Note: Availability of these tests throughout the semester will depend on supplies and laboratory processing capacity.
Please be aware of the following instructions before getting tested
Before Getting Tested
- For this saliva-based PCR test it is very important that you do not eat or drink within 30 minutes prior to your test.
- Schedule a time to be tested in a University-licensed survey. Within the survey you will be asked to provide:
- Your University Network ID (uNID) or that of your immediate household member who is a student, faculty or staff member.
- Sign the consent form
- Select a testing site (If you cannot go to a site, you will be prompted to provide a reason and the survey will end)
- Select a testing date
- Select a testing time
- If there are no testing times available, go back and select another day
- Once the scheduling process is complete you will receive an email reminder of your appointment.
-
Bring your U Card and the confirmation e-mail with you to the testing location
Do NOT come to the testing site if you are experiencing any of these COVID-19 symptoms:
- Cough, Shortness of Breath, or Difficulty Breathing
- Fever or Chills
- Muscle or Body Aches
- Vomiting or Diarrhea
- New Loss of Taste or Smell
If you ARE experiencing any of the above symptoms, please follow the symptomatic testing instructions below
What to Expect During the Test
- Distancing and masking will be enforced for all on site
- You will provide a self-collected saliva sample
- If your test is returned "not detected", you will receive your results via encrypted email to your official University email address. If you are an immediate household member, you will receive a result to the email you provided upon test collection. No further action is required.
- If your test is returned "detected", and you have a University Network ID (UNID), you will also receive a phone call from the University contact tracing staff with instructions to isolate and receive a confirmatory test. If you do not have a UNID, please refer to CDC guidelines.

Frequently Asked Questions
Students
Students who are enrolled in the current semester at the main campus in Salt Lake City, Utah may get tested twice per week.
Faculty and staff
All faculty and staff are eligible to get tested twice per week. If you have been recently hired, please allow two weeks for your University Network ID (UNID) to be added to the testing system.
Immediate household members
Immediate household members of students, faculty and staff who are older than 5 years of age are also eligible for testing twice per week. If the person being tested is between 5-17 years old, they must be accompanied by an adult. NOTE: Household members may only come to the staff-assisted testing sites, not the self-service sites.
Follow the isolation and reporting instructions included in your positive test result e-mail.
We still recommend getting tested. While the current vaccines have been tested for efficacy in preventing the vaccinated person's illness, less is known about the vaccine's ability to prevent a person from spreading the disease.
Your confirmation email will contain instructions on re-scheduling.
After following the reschedule link in your confirmation e-mail, you will be able to retake the survey and select the option that states 'I cannot be tested or I need to cancel my appointment.'
No, the University is providing this free for students, faculty and staff and immediate household members of students, faculty and staff.
While results will often be available within the day, 24-48 hours may be required to get you your results depending on testing demand.
There is no need to come in for this testing if you have tested positive in the last 90 days unless you are coming to get tested at the end of an isolation period. However, we do ask that you complete the above scheduling survey – you will be able to indicate that you have already tested positive when asked for your reason for not being tested.
Bring another form of photo ID and we will work with you on site.
